Day of rest- Ruhetag

Officially one rests on the seventh day. The hubby can barely lift his arms after yesterday's tour de force and I have to work. So we abandoned the house and will rest. Happy New Year everyone! See you in 2010!

Day 8

And again – hubby home alone. So he sets out to prepare the floors in the living room by sanding them down, so the workers can start to level them on Monday. The living room is almost done. What is left is the dining room. Same procedure.

On Saturday we’ve got someone come in to finish spackling the walls before we’re off to finally decide on bathroom fixtures, tiles, etc.

What else is new? The hubby managed to throw out the bathtub, shower and sinks with H’s help. Then they knocked almost all of the tiles off the walls. Now we got to figure out weather or not to keep the wall on the left to the door. Personally I don’t like it, I think it makes the bathroom look smaller and darker. On the up-side, the shower’s gonna cost less when we leave it like it is is. What do you reckon?

Probleme, Probleme. Was sagt Ihr?

Should the wall stay or should it go?

Soll die Wand bleiben oder gehen?

Day 6 & 7

The fun continues and again the wife is at work while the hubby is really, literally outdoing himself in the house. On day seven he didn’t rest but asked a good friend & neighbor for a helping hand. After getting to the house, I found the guys chiseling away the fugly tiles in the entrance hall but they didn’t stop there. Most of the panels in the bathroom were gone and unbelievable things came to light.

Looky what have we here? A super fugly bathtub and cork tile floors and….rags??? How did those get here?

Wait for it…

Was haben wir denn hier? Eine superhässliche Badewanne, Korkfliesen und…Lumpen???

Warte….

Day 5 or The Day Before Christmas

Time for another update.

Days 3 & 4

Monday and Tuesday the hubby had to work on his own in the house. First thing in the morning two workers came to level the upstairs floors.

the hubby continued in the living and dining room. He ripped out the loose parquet and floorboards. With the help of one of the workers he also moved the old, broken fireplace. He did a great job.

Next on the list is sanding the floors so the rest of the adhesive comes off and we’re ready to level the floors.

Day 2 – Nothing like a surprise to make/ruin your day

After 44 hours of work on a critical case some 500 miles from home, the hubby finally returned on Saturday night. By Sunday morning he was still in no condition to be schlepped to the house and work physically.

Luckily a little after one dear friends paid us a visit to bring salt and bread, an old tradition when moving into your own home. They wanted to see the house, so off we went.

After giving our friends the guided tour, the hubby donned his dungarees or “mole pants” as we’d like to refer to them. Because of this cute Czech children’s book. The book and the animated cartoon that accompanied me through my childhood and went by the title “How the Mole Got His Pants”. In which the mole finds a pair of blue dungarees…

Mole

Mole pants? Check.

So our friends offered to lend us a helping hand, which I am sure they regretted not 30 min later. The plan was to remove the old laminate floorboards in what will hopefully be our lovely bedroom soon.

We guessed that it would take us about 30 min to an hour and we’d be done and return home where we’d light the fourth candle and be merry.

We couldn’t have been more wrong.

Laminat

Here’s our friend happily starting to remove the floorboards.

Jack and Jill had cleverly put two layers of footfall sound insulation underneath. Only one could be easily removed and so it happened that we saw us faced with the stubborn last layer, cork tiles, glued to the screed. Yipeeeh

Now this being a Sunday in Germany, don’t expect any hardware store to be open. So the hubby got on the phone to the craftsman that was scheduled to level the upstairs floors in all rooms, who couldn’t believe what he heard. In fact he was so amazed that not 15 minutes later, the doorbell rang and the guy stood there in person, wanting to take a look at the mess. He provided us with a couple of power tools and about three hours later we had managed to pry the cork tiles off the floor and prepare it so that the guy can start working on Monday morning. Phew

We were finally finished at around 5:30pm and went out for dinner. All of us barely able to lift our arms anymore. We’re blessed to have such great friends. A big THANK YOU to K+H who didn’t flee the scene and stayed to help us out, thereby ruining their sacred Sunday. Thanks guys. We owe you big time.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Maulwurf in Hose – Lieblingsmann in Maulwurfshose (siehe Bild). Check.

Wir schulden Euch was.

Day 1 – The wife alone at work

After the hubby spent all week meeting with various craftsmen and discussing estimates and costs it just so happened that when it came to the weekend, he was called out while on duty. Bummer. This was supposed to be our first weekend together and lots of wood panelling and laminate were waiting to be removed on the upstairs floor. Alas it was not to be.

So what’s a woman to do? Take matters in her own hands and so it happened that the wife started to demolish the first room by herself.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Was macht die Frau folglich?

So the wife is happy to take the crowbar to the mess, which may explain the wicked smile.

Choices, choices – Die Qual der Wahl

I find it difficult to picture what kind of laminate should go into our 16ft x19ft sized living room. Choices, choices. The living room has two huge windows leading to the porch and while they are pretty big, I am afraid that the room is not entirely bright due to the canopied porch.

I always pictured the laminate to be a warmer, darker color. Like walnut wood. We also quite liked the look of the cottonwood tree laminate, so we took these two as samples home. Last weekend the hubby and Serge came home with cherry wood and a darker maple, which looked lovely but hasn’t got that “warm feel” to it and reminds us of the light maple floors we have in our current place.

It did however have the old wooden floorboard kind of look (and feel) to it. So now we’re really not sure.

CIMG2253_450x600

CIMG2254_450x600This is how Jack and Jill decorated the room. Hating the flooring, the colors, the wall structure but the room is really not that bad if you look beyond all the decorating mess.

Here are the four samples for the laminate, which one do you like best?

121                                from left to right: walnut, cottonwood, cherry and maple

This is it

This is the house that Jack built. If Jack was the name of the previous owner we bought the house from, which it is not. Jack is the name we borrowed from the infamous nursery rhyme and in the name of privacy and all that is holy, we cleverly changed the names of those involved.

Anyway, this is it. The house we saw for the first time earlier in the year. The house we loved because it was big enough, came with a basement and a big enough garden. The house that we thought we would never be able to afford.

Jack and Jill* gave up the house after their divorce and left us with this little gem and a hunger to make this our home.

A lot of sweat, tears and hopefully no blood will have to be invested to make this into the house of our dreams and because we did not win the lottery and both of us are working full time, we will be able to make improvements bit by bit. This is our story and you are invited to follow us on our little adventure.
-----------------------------------------------------------
